How to identify real green crackers

Last updated:

You can identify a real green cracker by two marks on its box: the green fireworks logo of CSIR-NEERI and a QR code that you can scan to see the product's details. The logo alone is not proof, because a printed logo is easy to copy; the QR code scan is the check that counts.

If you are new to the topic, start with what green crackers are. This page covers how to check a box in your hand, and what to do if the marks are missing. For questions about ordering from us, see the FAQ.

What does the green cracker logo look like?

The mark is a green logo that identifies the product as a CSIR-NEERI green firework. CSIR-NEERI is the Nagpur institute that developed the green formulations (CSIR-NEERI). It is printed on the outer box or packet, usually on the front or the side panel, near the brand name.

Look for it on the outer packaging of each item, not on a carton that holds many different boxes. Every item that claims to be green should carry its own mark.

How do I scan the QR code on green crackers?

  1. Find the QR code on the box. It usually sits close to the green logo.
  2. Install the CSIR-NEERI green QR code app from your phone's app store. Check that the publisher is CSIR-NEERI before installing.
  3. Open the app and scan the code.
  4. Read what it shows: the manufacturer's name, the product, and the formulation it was made to.
  5. Compare what the app shows with what is printed on the box. The brand and the type of cracker (sparkler, anar, chakkar and so on) should match.

A normal phone camera may also read the code, but the official app is the better check, because it looks the code up in NEERI's own records. CSIR-NEERI introduced this QR system when green crackers were launched in 2019 so that buyers could tell real green products from copies (PIB, 2019).

What are the warning signs of a fake green cracker?

Be careful if you see any of these:

That last point matters in our own shop. Our Green Sparklers 30 cm are named for the colour of their sparks. They are not green crackers: we sell regular crackers, and none of our boxes carry the NEERI logo or QR code.

Does a green colour or a "green" name make a cracker green?

No. The colour of the sparks or the packaging has nothing to do with emissions. Green light in fireworks traditionally comes from barium compounds, which are the very ingredients green formulations try to reduce. A "green cracker" is defined by its formulation and its NEERI marks, not by its colour (PIB, 2018).

Do green crackers look or sound different when lit?

Usually you won't notice much difference. Green formulations aim to produce less smoke and fine dust, and some use smaller shells, so the display can look slightly cleaner. They still spark, crackle and bang. You cannot tell a green cracker from a normal one by watching it, which is why the box check matters.

What should I check besides the green marks?

A good box tells you more than whether it is green. Before you light anything, check:

Then read our firecracker safety tips before you light the first one.

What if I already bought crackers without the marks?

They are still fireworks, and they need the same care when lit. You simply can't count on them having the lower emissions that a NEERI formulation targets. Light fewer of them, in an open space, and keep children at a distance.
